Thai food group Betagro takes majority control of ingredient supply startup Freshket

Betagro moves from investor to owner: its family holding company backed Freshket's $23.5 million Series B in 2022. The Bangkok platform supplies more than 20,000 restaurants, hotels and caterers.

Betagro, the Thai meat, feed and food producer listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Freshket, a Bangkok startup that runs an online platform supplying ingredients to restaurants, hotels and caterers. The deal was announced on October 20, 2026 and made through the company's corporate venture arm, Betagro Ventures.

Neither side disclosed the price or the exact size of the stake. Thai-language reports described Betagro as becoming Freshket's major shareholder, and English-language outlets including DealStreetAsia and TNGlobal described the holding as a majority stake. The companies did not say what happens to Freshket's existing investors.

Freshket's co-founder and chief executive, Ponglada Paniangwet, is quoted in the announcement and is expected to continue leading the business. The Freshket brand was not reported to be changing.

What Freshket built

Founded in 2017, Freshket connects farmers and food producers with food businesses through an online platform that offers more than 10,000 products, including meat, fresh vegetables and fruit, dry goods and frozen food. It serves more than 20,000 foodservice operators and says its delivery accuracy is above 98.5%, a figure the company reports itself.

The platform currently delivers in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Khon Kaen. Freshket says its model reduces logistics complexity and food waste and makes the supply chain more transparent.

Under Betagro, Freshket plans to add more imported goods, including seafood, premium Japanese ingredients, cheese and butter, to extend its service to Greater Bangkok and major regional cities, and to upgrade its cold-chain logistics so products stay fresh in delivery.

The founders and the funding

Ponglada Paniangwet co-founded Freshket with Tuangploi Chiwalaksanangkoon, according to e27. DealStreetAsia identified Tuangploi as the company's chief marketing officer, with Saran Chiwtanasuntorn as chief technology officer and Narit Intharat as chief operating officer.

The startup raised an undisclosed seed round from 500 TukTuks in 2017. In 2020 it raised a $3 million Series A led by Openspace Ventures, and in May 2022 it raised a $23.5 million Series B, about 800 million baht, led by PTT Oil and Retail Business (OR), the listed fuel retailer. Openspace, Betagro Holding, ORZON Ventures and Volta Circle also invested in that round, e27 reported at the time.

e27 also reported a later round led by Thai President Foods, maker of MAMA instant noodles, and Kliff Capital, with Openspace and ECG Venture Capital joining; no amount was given. Dealroom puts Freshket's total funding at about $35 million. The rounds with published amounts add up to $26.5 million.

Why Betagro is buying

Betagro produces and sells animal feed, livestock, meat, eggs and processed foods in Thailand and exports to more than 35 countries. It also has a pet food business. Betagro said the deal would strengthen its foodservice division through digital distribution.

The deal gives Betagro a direct digital channel to those customers, while Freshket gains access to Betagro's production, nationwide logistics network and capital. Betagro has described the purchase as its entry into food technology. Chayadhorn Taepaisitphongse, Betagro's president of animal nutrition and new ventures, said in the Thai-language announcement that the investment supports Betagro's strategy of building a complete and sustainable food system.

Ponglada said Betagro's logistics network and capital would allow Freshket to deliver high-quality ingredients at competitive cost and grow sustainably over the long term. Dealroom reported that Betagro also agreed this month to take a 59.18% stake in Polar Bear Mission, another platform supplying hotels and restaurants, though that deal was not described in the Freshket announcement.

Corporates move in on Thai startups

e27 framed the deal as part of a wider pattern of large Thai companies taking control of local startups. In Freshket's market, its main domestic competitor is Makro, the wholesale chain run by CP Axtra, e27 noted, and similar platforms elsewhere in the region include Kamereo in Vietnam.

The business carries risks. e27 pointed to Indonesia's TaniHub, a farm-to-business supply startup that ran into trouble after shifting to business customers, as an example of how thin margins in food distribution can hurt platforms in this sector.
