Epiq, the legal technology and services company, said on September 25, 2026 that it had acquired Canopy, a company that makes data breach response software. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Canopy's platform will be integrated into Epiq AI, Epiq's suite of agentic AI tools, and made available through Epiq Service Cloud, its platform for legal technology and services. Canopy's engineers and cyber response specialists join Epiq to work on Epiq AI for Cyber.
Adi Elliott, Canopy's former chief operating officer, joins Epiq as vice president of product management for cyber.
What Canopy built
Canopy was founded in 2018 and is based in Reston, Virginia, according to Stanford's CodeX TechIndex, which describes it as a provider of AI-powered privacy and data breach response software.
After a cyber attack, companies and their lawyers must work out what information was taken, whether it includes sensitive personal or health data, and which individuals have to be notified. Canopy's patented platform analyses the exposed data, detects sensitive information and identifies the people affected.
Its Auto Review feature uses agentic AI to automate the first level of data mining review, so that teams can move straight from culling the data to quality control.
"Canopy was built to support organizations in understanding the scope and impact of a cyber incident and responding with greater speed and confidence," Elliott said. Epiq said Epiq AI for Cyber extends its existing incident work, and that Canopy's engineers and specialists will help develop it.
“Canopy has been a longstanding partner to Epiq in helping organizations respond to cyber incidents.”
Why Epiq is buying
Epiq says it works with more than 87% of breach counsel and over 70% of cyber insurers, and supports more than 1,800 cyber incidents a year. It says it delivers up to 95% data reduction using AI and can send up to 2 million notifications a day.
The two companies were already partners. "Canopy has been a longstanding partner to Epiq in helping organizations respond to cyber incidents," said Scott Berger, Epiq's senior vice president for managed services and cyber solutions. He said bringing its technology and engineers in-house would give clients a more connected breach response, from preparation before an incident to the response afterwards.
Elliott said Canopy was built to help organisations understand the scope and impact of an incident and respond with more speed and confidence, and that Epiq would give it the global resources and scale to bring the technology to more organisations.
What changes for clients
Berger said clients would gain cyber tools that reduce risk exposure through preparation before an incident and strengthen the response afterwards with AI. Epiq Service Cloud, where Canopy's technology will be offered, is the company's platform giving clients access to its legal technology and services, including its cyber solutions.
Elliott brings experience leading software and services businesses across legal technology, cyber incident response and data-driven operations, according to Epiq. In his new role he will oversee product management for Epiq's cyber offering, which now includes Canopy's platform and its Auto Review feature.
Epiq did not say whether Canopy will continue to sell its software under its own name to customers that do not use Epiq's services.
The founders and the funding
Canopy's funding has not been publicly disclosed, and Stanford's TechIndex lists no total. Neither company said how many people work at Canopy or how many of them are moving to Epiq, beyond its engineers, cyber response specialists and Elliott.
Where Canopy fits at Epiq
Epiq has more than 4,000 people and a presence in 17 countries, and works for corporations, law firms and courts on legal, compliance and settlement administration. Its cyber work centres on helping breach counsel and insurers assess what was exposed and notify the people affected, the process Canopy's software automates.
SecurityWeek counted 39 cybersecurity deals announced in September 2026, and listed Epiq's purchase of Canopy among them.
