Hanger to acquire Bionic Power, maker of the Agilik smart knee orthosis, after leading its Series A

Hanger's venture arm made Bionic Power its first investment in 2024. Now the US orthotics and prosthetics provider is buying the Canadian company outright and plans to offer its device through more than 900 clinics.

Hanger, a US provider of orthotic and prosthetic care, said on November 2, 2026 that it is acquiring Bionic Power, a Canadian company that makes the Agilik, a microprocessor-controlled knee-ankle-foot orthosis. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, according to Hanger's announcement from Austin, Texas.

Hanger did not disclose the price or other terms. Bionic Power will join Hanger's Products & Services organization, and its chief executive, Gualtiero Guadagni, will continue to lead the business.

The purchase turns an earlier venture investment into full ownership. Hanger Ventures, the company's investment arm, led Bionic Power's Series A in 2024, in what Hanger then described as its inaugural investment.

What Bionic Power built

The Agilik is a smart brace worn on the leg, controlled by a microprocessor. It is designed for children and adults with gait impairments caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and stroke. Bionic Power's website describes it as a smart orthosis that helps users gain endurance and independence, and offers a demonstration unit and a companion app.

Bionic Power developed the device with the NIH Medical Center under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, according to Hanger. Agilik users are now spread across 10 countries, and the company was recently named to the 2026 Forbes Accessibility 200 list.

Thuasne, an orthotics company that invested in Bionic Power in 2024 and describes itself as a global leader in composite orthotic devices, said at the time that the Agilik was the product of 14 years of research.

Why Hanger is buying

Hanger runs about 925 orthotic and prosthetic clinics in the United States, Dealroom reported, and plans to make the Agilik available through them. Pete Stoy, Hanger's chief executive, said combining Hanger's clinical research and technical expertise with Bionic Power's product would help more children and adults, and that bringing the Bionic Power team into the Hanger ecosystem would strengthen that work.

Guadagni said becoming part of Hanger was a validation of the outcomes the Agilik has delivered for patients. "We are thrilled to join the Hanger team," he said. He added that from the start of the companies' collaboration it had been clear that Bionic Power's mission was aligned with Hanger's culture.

Hanger has been building a products business alongside its clinics. In recent months its brands have launched new prosthetic feet and a body-powered finger prosthesis, and one of them, Surestep, bought the Blount's KAFO brace from JMMR in August, according to Hanger's newsroom.

The funding

Hanger Ventures announced its first investment in Bionic Power in July 2024, committing to lead a Series A round. The O&P EDGE reported then that the partnership would give Bionic Power funding and support for product development, clinical trials and its commercial launch. "We are thrilled to make our inaugural investment in Bionic Power," said James Campbell, president of Hanger Ventures and Hanger's chief clinical officer.

Thuasne and Viscogliosi Brothers Watermark, a medtech investor, later joined the round. Together with Hanger Ventures they helped raise nearly 5 million Canadian dollars, Thuasne said in November 2024; Dealroom put the round at about $3.67 million. Bionic Power's founding date, headquarters city and total funding were not disclosed with the deal.

Hanger Ventures has since made other investments, including one in Prosthetic Fit 360 announced in August 2026.

A bigger Hanger

The purchase comes as Hanger prepares for a larger combination. In September Hanger and Numotion announced plans to combine, creating what they called a leader in mobility and patient care, under the name Hanger Numotion. Dealroom reported that the companies say the merged group would serve more than 1.5 million patients a year.

For Bionic Power, the deal swaps a minority investor for an owner that also runs the clinics where patients are fitted. Hanger said it wants to expand access to the Agilik; it did not say how quickly the device will be offered across its clinic network or whether Bionic Power will keep selling through other providers.
