Mistral AI, the French AI lab, has acquired New Material, a British design and product studio that builds AI-native tools and products. New Material announced the deal on its website in mid-October 2026, and Dealroom reported it on October 15.
The price was not disclosed.
The New Material team will form a new unit inside Mistral called Solutions Design. Working across design, engineering and AI, it will develop products together with customers, creating what the studio called a tight feedback loop between real-world deployments and Mistral's own products.
What New Material built
New Material Studio Ltd is registered in England and Wales. Its founders started it on the belief that, for AI to be adopted for the long term, human-centred design has to be part of the work from the first idea through to implementation, covering tooling, data, model training, product design and engineering.
Over six years the studio says it shipped award-winning AI-native tools, products and ventures in the automotive, retail, legal and healthcare sectors. Its partners included Ford, the tennis player Rafael Nadal, the Wellcome Trust and law firms in the AmLaw 50.
In its announcement, New Material said it was ready to take what it had learned and apply it at a new scale, and that it had been impressed by Mistral's rigour in delivering value to customers across science, product and solutions. The studio did not name its founders in the post, and no outside funding has been reported.
New Material offered its clients ideas, tooling, data, support with model training, product design and engineering as one service, rather than handing off a design to another firm to build. That cross-disciplinary approach is what Mistral is now bringing inside the company.
“We are ready to take all that we have learned and apply it at a new scale.”
Why Mistral is buying
Mistral describes itself as a full-stack AI company and sells its models and tools to enterprises and governments. It presents much of that work as sovereign AI, and the new Solutions Design team will work on deployments for large enterprise clients, according to Maddyness.
Nicolas Schuhl, Mistral's head of applied AI, linked the deal to that push, saying that building product thinking into deployments would speed up the delivery of sovereign AI solutions, according to Dealroom. Zach Krasner, Mistral's head of design, said strong design is critical to delivering powerful AI solutions, according to ToolNavs, which reported that Mistral's official account welcomed the team on October 14, the day New Material confirmed the deal.
French startup site Maddyness reported that the studio's job is to close the gap between the raw power of large language models and their practical use in the field.
A busy year of deals for Mistral
New Material is Mistral's fourth acquisition of 2026, according to Maddyness. It follows the cloud platform Koyeb in February, industrial AI company Emmi AI in May and the advertising creative startup Pimento in September.
Maddyness also noted that Mistral recently raised €3 billion (about $3.5 billion) at a €21 billion valuation in a round led by Samsung, with ASML and Nvidia taking part.
Each of this year's deals has added a different capability. Koyeb brought cloud infrastructure, Emmi AI industrial applications and Pimento creative tools for advertisers. New Material adds people whose job is to design the products customers use on top of Mistral's models.
What happens to clients
In its farewell note, New Material thanked its clients, collaborators and former staff for their part in its work building AI-native products. It did not say whether existing client projects would move to Mistral or be wound down.
Neither company said how many people are joining Mistral. ToolNavs, which tracked the announcement, also noted that it was not disclosed whether the team would stay together as one unit or be spread across Mistral's product lines.
