Newsela, the New York-based maker of reading, instruction and assessment products for schools, announced on 4 March 2026 that it had acquired EveryDay Labs, a company that works with K-12 school districts to prevent and reduce chronic absenteeism.

The companies did not disclose the price or other financial terms. East Wind Advisors represented EveryDay Labs in the deal and law firm Gunderson Dettmer acted as its legal counsel.

EveryDay Labs becomes part of Schoolytics by Newsela, a student data platform that Newsela acquired in January. The companies said an integration between the two products was coming soon, and that EveryDay Labs would also stay on sale as a standalone attendance product.

What EveryDay Labs built

EveryDay Labs, previously known as In Class Today, was founded in 2015 and is based in Redwood City, California, according to CB Insights. Its approach was developed by founder and chief scientist Dr. Todd Rogers and combines behavioural science, data science and family engagement.

In practice, districts use the service to send families proactive, personalised messages about their children's attendance, with multilingual support, and can buy strategic consulting alongside it. The company says it has partnered with more than 4,000 schools, helped prevent 3.1 million absences and restored more than 1.1 billion minutes of instruction.

Emily Bailard is the company's chief executive. In the announcement she said educators had told the company that separate, unconnected systems made their work harder.

Bailard said the company had been started on the belief that every student should have the chance to be present and learning every day, and that combining its attendance product with academic tools, early warning systems and multi-tiered support would give districts a fuller picture of each student.

Why Newsela is buying

Newsela chief executive Pep Carrera described attendance as a leading indicator of student engagement and learning, and said the aim was to spot patterns before chronic absenteeism sets in. He called EveryDay Labs' product research-backed and a natural fit for the way districts plan interventions.

Schoolytics pulls together data on student progress, behaviour and attendance so that districts have one place to look. Adding EveryDay Labs gives Schoolytics customers an attendance improvement product, while EveryDay Labs customers gain access to Schoolytics' data and multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) tools.

The companies said they planned to build new family communication and data products that combine attendance, academic and behavioural information, shaped by feedback from district partners.

The founders and the funding

EveryDay Labs raised an $8 million Series A in 2021 led by Rethink Impact. Reach Capital, Gary Community Ventures, City Light Capital, RedHouse Education, Edovate Capital, Bonsal Capital and Copper Wire Ventures also took part, according to Citybiz. No later round has been reported, and the company did not disclose its headcount.

Gunderson Dettmer's deal team was led by corporate and M&A partners Jenn Sayles Okorn and Glen Van Ligten, with specialists in data privacy, employment, executive compensation, licensing and tax. Newsela's advisers were not named.

A string of deals for Newsela

The purchase is the latest in a run of acquisitions by Newsela, which now describes itself as a data, instruction and assessment company. It bought Formative, an assessment platform, in 2023 and later acquired Generation Genius, a K-8 science and maths video service.

On 20 January 2026 Newsela announced it had bought Schoolytics, a Washington, DC-based analytics company founded in 2020, also for undisclosed terms. Newsela said at the time that it planned to connect Schoolytics with Formative's district assessment product and with Luna, its AI teaching assistant.

With EveryDay Labs added, Newsela's product suite covers Newsela, Formative, Schoolytics and EveryDay Labs, alongside Luna, an AI teaching assistant that EdTech Chronicle said was used by thousands of schools. The companies did not say how many EveryDay Labs staff would join Newsela.
