Salesforce buys Berlin-founded content platform Contentful for about $1.5 billion in cash

Salesforce wants Contentful's content store as the layer its Agentforce AI agents draw on; the price disclosed in a later filing was about half the $3 billion valuation Contentful reached in 2021.

Salesforce announced on June 1, 2026 that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Contentful, a headless content management company founded in Berlin in 2013. Contentful says more than 4,800 brands use its platform to store, manage and deliver text, images and other content to websites, apps and other channels.

Salesforce did not give a price in its announcement. Its quarterly report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission later put the deal at about $1.5 billion in cash, net of the value of the Contentful shares Salesforce already owned, and subject to customary adjustments. The filing said the agreement was signed in May 2026. Earlier, Germany's Manager Magazin had put the price at about €1.3 billion, according to Berlin Partner's Invest in Berlin news service.

Salesforce had expected the deal to close in the third quarter of its 2027 fiscal year. An editor's note added to its announcement said the acquisition was completed on September 1, 2026. Contentful will be built into Salesforce's Customer 360 products while remaining usable as a standalone headless platform, the company said.

What Contentful built

Contentful was founded in 2013 by Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri. It belongs to the category of headless or composable content management systems: instead of tying content to a particular website template, it stores it in a structured form and sends it through APIs to any front end, from a web page to a mobile app or a kiosk.

Constellation Research reported that the company had added AI actions, audience segmentation, real-time experiments, data connections and localisation tools on top of the core system. Through the deal Salesforce gains a platform that supports 47,000 websites, handles 180 billion API calls a month and has a community of 550,000 members, Constellation Research said.

In 2021, when it raised its last large round, Contentful counted Shopify, Staples, Atlassian and Electronic Arts among its customers and said it worked with 30% of the Fortune 500. It had main offices in San Francisco, Denver and Berlin, Crunchbase News reported at the time.

Why Salesforce is buying

Salesforce said Contentful would give its Headless 360 offering a native, enterprise-grade content layer that connects customer data with content. Combined with Data 360, its customer data platform, and Agentforce, its AI agent product, the company said businesses would be able to assemble personalised experiences for each customer across email, web and mobile, and across marketing, commerce and sales.

Once inside Salesforce, Contentful's structured content becomes available to Agentforce, so that AI agents can query, assemble and deliver content without manual publishing steps, Salesforce said. Jujhar Singh, president of C360 applications and industries at Salesforce, said every customer interaction depends on the right data, the right AI-driven content and a modern experience.

Karthik Rau, Contentful's chief executive, said the company's API-first architecture fits into the Salesforce stack and that the deal would give Agentforce the content layer it needs.

The founders and the funding

In July 2021 it raised a $175 million Series F led by Tiger Global, with Base10's Advancement Initiative and Tidemark joining, at a valuation of more than $3 billion, Tech.eu and Crunchbase News reported. Crunchbase put its total funding at about $335 million at that point. Balderton Capital led its seed and Series A rounds, Tech.eu reported, and Sapphire Ventures led an $80 million Series E in 2020, according to TechCrunch.

Salesforce was itself a shareholder before the deal, as its SEC filing shows. The roughly $1.5 billion cash price is about half the valuation of the 2021 round. Neither company disclosed how the proceeds would be split among investors, founders and employees.

Part of a run of Salesforce deals

Contentful was one of several companies Salesforce agreed to buy in 2026. The same quarterly filing lists Qualified, which it completed earlier in the year, and an agreement signed in June 2026 to acquire Intercom, the maker of the Fin customer service agent, for about $3.6 billion.

In its Contentful announcement, Salesforce framed the purchase around Agentforce, saying the content layer would let its AI agents assemble and deliver personalised experiences across every channel. Constellation Research described Salesforce as a long-time champion of headless deployments that is now organising its products around agentic AI.
